I felt like writing this.
#1 -- 'To Pimp A Butterfly' - Kendrick Lamar
The obvious choice, it would be stupid not to choose this, an album with the biggest impact possible on society, bringing back old 90s hip hop with a mix of contained anger against the flaws of society and of the lifestyle of African-Americans. He tells a story, each song with a certain part of a poem, a poem which at the end he recites to Tupac Shakur in 'Mortal Man', Tupac responds perfectly with bits of an interview with him from before his death. Kendrick got 11 Grammy Nominations for this album, second to only Michael Jackson in 1984 for most nominations in one Grammy Award ceremony. TPAB is truly a great album, the best tracks on the album in my opinion are 'King Kunta' a bumpy and groovy jazz-rap song, 'How Much A Dollar Cost?' President Barack Obama's favorite off the album, a song with a nice beat and deep, deep lyrics. Then there is 'Alright' the anthem for a year where gun violence is high and with social media exposing more and more of it in relation to racial disputes and unfairness, it is a great song. Shoutout to Kenny Llama.
#2 -- 'Dirty Sprite 2' - Future
My personal favorite, the wavy and groovy album by the 'Sensational' Future Hendrix. This is a Trap music album, a dance-heavy sub-genre of Hip-Hop with songs that are very instrumental focused. Future is the king of this sub-genre, Gucci Mane has been locked up for a while, letting Future reestablish himself with 'DS2', an album about Future's struggles with drugs, women, and the life of poor people in poor areas where Future cam from. It doesn't have a story like the Kendrick album I mentioned, but every song on this album is good and most of them are hits. The best songs are 'Kno The Meaning' about when his DJ got locked up in a prison for having drugs on him, as well as Future's hard drive, with every unreleased song Future recorded for a year. You also have 'Stick Talk' the dance worthy, beast of a song with a catchy melody, and classic Future vocals. Then there is 'The Percocet and the Stripper's Joint', a chill, wavy song with a great instrumental beat. If you can't understand him then 'You're too soft'.
#3 -- 'I Don't Like Shit I don't Go Outside' - Earl Sweatshirt
Earl got depressed. People may not want to admit it, but it seems the more depressed he gets, the better lyrics he performs, and the better beat he produces. That's why the dark, gloomy 'IDLSIDGO' is an overlooked gem. Talking about his problems with drugs, loneliness, women, and the sadness he has been feeling while touring. Earl has grown up from his happy Odd Future days, he is now rapping about what he really feels like, nothing barring from the utter truth he is speaking. Best songs are 'Huey' the beautiful opener with a happy beat. 'Faucet' the heavy, hard spitting best song in a lyrical way on the album. 'Off Top' directed by Odd Future bandmate Left Brain, the nice beat, and deep lyrics make it a cool song.
#4 -- '56 Nights' - DJ Esco, Hosted by Future
Future is back on the list with an album about the whole fiasco with his DJ getting stuck in an Arabian jail for 56 nights, Future's song filled hard-drive on him, leaving Future song less. So Future went mad on this record, feeling sad amidst the groovy beats. It is masterfully produced by DJ Esco, and masterfully rapped on by Future. Best songs are '56 Nights' the title and the best song. 'Never gon Lose' a great track with a nice beat, then there is 'Trap Ni**as' a song with a great beat and very catchy lyrics.
#5 -- IDK
There were many albums i missed on hearing on, 'Summertime '06' by Vince Staples, it probably would've been #5. There was 'Tetsuo and Youth' by the wonderful Lupe Fiasco. 'Rodeo' By Travis Scott and 'The Documentary 2' by the Game. As well as 'Bush' by Snoop D oh Double G. Sorry but I couldn't finish it out.
