Danny Brown is fairly well-known rapper hailing from Detroit. Most people know him from his verse in the song 'Detroit vs Everybody' featuring fellow Detroit rappers Eminem, Big Sean, and Dej Loaf as well as others. They also may know Brown from his great and zany album 'XXX' which came out in 2011. In this album most people were introduced to a rapper that has a cartoonish-like voice that can range from low to high, which is the most unique part about his style. Brown in fact talks in a normal tone with a country twang (even though he's from Detroit?) which means his rap voice is different from his normal voice, and he changes it during performances and such. It is amusing to see him freestyle because if you hear his voice before he starts rapping then listen to him rap the difference is tremendous. Aside from his voice which goes nicely with his flow, his music is wild and zany, sometimes graphic and sometimes very funny which gives him a unique versatility that no other rapper has. Anyways he released another album 'Old' in 2013 that I liked better than 'XXX' due to the better production it had, because I thought 'XXX' was carried by too much percussion. Since then he has been quiet on the music-end but has been on tour by himself and with rappers Tyler, The Creator, A$AP Rocky, and Vince Staples on a mega tour. He recently released a new single entitled 'When It Rain' the first off his upcoming album which has yet to be named or announced.
His new song is much like his songs from his album 'Old' with the extra production in the beat, the cellphone like beeps are accompanied by a bassy beat which is very minimal at the first part of the track to where Brown's voice overpowers it. He also changes his voice 3 times in this song, He starts out with his signature style at the start of the song, then near the middle of the song after a long first verse the pre-hook comes in and his high pitched voice carries the track with the line-
'You ain't heard it like this before
They don't do it like this no more
That get on up, that get on up
That get on up, up on the floor
You ain't heard it like this before
They don't do it like this no more'
They don't do it like this no more
That get on up, that get on up
That get on up, up on the floor
You ain't heard it like this before
They don't do it like this no more'
Which is rapped with a flow smoother than butter, baby. After that the hook finally comes in with the title line-
'Oh, you ain't know that
When it rain, when it pour, get your ass on the floor now
Oh, you ain't know that, did you?
When it rain, when it pour, get your ass on the floor now'
When it rain, when it pour, get your ass on the floor now
Oh, you ain't know that, did you?
When it rain, when it pour, get your ass on the floor now'
Which is repeated twice more, the hook isn't enough to sing along to because it resembles the rapping used throughout the track, so the track still would sound monotone to someone that isn't very familiar with rap that has no hook or chorus.
He then switches his voice once more to a fast-paced high pitch which sounds great and is my favorite part of the song mostly because it's the grooviest part and the part you can most nod your head to. Overall the song shows some great versatility from the 35 year old, but it's nothing new and resembles his old stuff too much even though the production is significantly better in this song. Hopefully this album will be packed with at least a few new styles because I won't be as interested in it if it's just another 'Old' album. Ha.
