I will be doing something different because I've been listening to a lot of rap lately, so that's basically how this blog started, me being in to basketball, so I figured why not write about it. I'm gonna be talking about some rappers people argue about on Twitter and Instagram.
The Rappers will be rated by these following abilities:
Lyrics- The rating on how good the words are in the song, rhymes well, goes with the beat, sets the tone, and puts forth the message.
Style- How well the rapper goes with the beat, and the ability to freestyle with any beat.
Unique- Different or very artistic.
Best Songs: The Best Songs (2) (Opinion)
Young Bloods-
Earl Sweatshirt- Earl Sweatshirt was a rapper who found his own success, he and his best friends/ rap collective 'Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All Don't Give A F*** Loiter Squad', or simply Odd Future, Wolf Gang, and even Golf Wang. He is with Tyler, The Creator who will appear later in the list, Mike G, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Domo Genesis, Syd Tha Kyd, Frank Ocean, Jasper Dolphin, Matt Martians, L-Boy, and Taco, all fairly well known in the underground rap scene. Earl found his success early, when he was 16-17, he made mixtapes with his fellow members but then disappeared when Odd Future made it big, Tyler won an MTV award, Frank won two Grammy's, and their TV Show 'Loiter Squad' was being made. He was no where to be found and soon "Free Earl" was said everytime someone mentioned Odd Future, they found him in a Boarding School called Samoa. Since then he has released Doris, and IDLSIDGO, while appearing on Tyler's Goblin, Wolf, and on other albums by Mac Miller and such.
Lyrics- Earl's voice is a twang of being a teen and an adult, in the middle. He spits bars without much articulation but finds many references to his rhymes, which go well with the beat. 6/10.
Style- He broke a promise to never seriously freestyle but he shows he can do it-Freestyle here. He can't freestyle to every beat though. 7/10.
Unique- His story is unique, but he raps similar to others. 4/10.
Best songs- 'WHOA' is catchy, 'Chum' is personal but his best comes on 'Earl', his hit, and the start of his mystery.
Tyler, The Creator- Tyler's right hand man is Earl, and the opposite Earl's is Tyler. It seems right to talk about Tyler. Tyler has a weird style and has a lot of media success, has 3 albums, 'Goblin', 'Wolf', and his new one, 'Cherry Bomb'. He was born fatherless, and grew up being too white for the black kids and too black for the whites, like Earl, he liked skateboarding and drawing. His talent was rapping with multiple personalities like, Wolf Haley, the nicer one and the best rapper, Ace, the one in love, Tron Cat, the psycho, Sam, the crazy one.
Lyrics- Tyler has a deep voice, and can articulate, he can also make it harsh at any moment. His lyrics are scattered, but are generally witty and smart. 6/10
Style- He doesn't like freestyling so there is no evidence to work with, but he can produce beats and can rhyme well to them. 8/10.
Unique- There is no rapper like him, he has multiple personalities as I've said before and raps amazingly with each of them, no rapper makes the videos as he does, dark and evil, but also happy and colorful. Going with a story for most of his albums, 'Goblin' was just him talking to his therapist, so was his mixtape 'Bastard'. 'Wolf' was about camp Flog Gnaw and the conclusions to most of his characters, while rapping as Wolf Haley and Sam for the most part. 'Cherry Bomb' is all Wolf Haley infused with the- now dead- Ace. 10/10.
Best Songs- This is tough, 'Yonkers' is different but not his best, 'Domo23' is fast and jamming. 'Sandwitches' is also good, 'Bastard' is my favorite.
Rappers in their primes:
Kendrick Lamar- Kendrick hit major success when he dropped 'To Pimp a Butterfly' 2 months ago, catching everyone's attention for his long awaited 'breakout' album. Kendrick comes from Compton, the city which has produced many successful rappers (NWA, Dr Dre, Ice Cube). He was a talented writer but didn't know how to go mainstream, working as a bodyguard before he started to record and make it big. He released 'Section.80' and getting recognized by greats like Eminem, Kanye, and such. When he released 'Good Kid, M.a.a.d City' my favorite album of all time, second to RHCP's 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik'. He told a story of his life on that album. He is my favorite rapper.
Lyrics- Kendrick goes hard, having accurate lyrics that go well with the beat. He can change his voice form high to low on any song. 7/10.
Style- Kendrick can freestyle really well, smart, and clearly. He is a very smart rapper, like Tupac. He writes songs but his beats are never the best. 8/10.
Unique- Kendrick can reach out to the white public, the one who doesn't usually listen to rap and get them to like it, but also embracing to the African-American people who love his music, as well as all other races. That is special. 9/10.
Best Songs- 'A.D.H.D' is groovy and his trademark rapping is on full. 'i' is catchy and positive. 'King Kunta' is thumping and slick. Those 3 are the best. '
Next Time: Kanye, JayZ, etc.
